ROTAN, Texas — The Hermleigh Lady Cardinals claimed their first district championship in school history here Monday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep against Rotan.

Hermleigh (7-2, 5-1) took control early in game one, jumping out to a five run lead in the first inning before taking a 16-5 win. Taylor Porter led the offensive attack for the Lady Cardinals, going 5-for-5 at the plate with three doubles and four RBI. Sabrina Jones chipped in as well, collecting a pair of hits while scoring three runs and driving in two. Kelsey Digby got the win in the circle for Hermleigh, scattering 10 hits and allowing five runs over six innings of work with two strikeouts.

In game two, Jones again helped pace the Lady Cardinals on offense, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Digby, who went 1-for-2 and scored four runs, also picked up her second win of the day, tossing seven innings and allowing eight runs with five strikeouts.

Hermleigh, who last made the playoffs in the 97 season, will have a first round bye in the playoffs and will face the winner of the Hawley-Windthorst series on a date and time to be determined next week.
