HERMLEIGH, Texas — Monday, August 3rd is a big day across the state of Texas as high school football teams begin two-a-day workouts. The Hermleigh Cardinals have been impatiently waiting and are prepared to get football season underway.

Hermleigh, who finished last season with a 5-4 record overall and 0-3 in district, looks to get back to the playoffs after missing out on the postseason last year. There are reasons to be optimistic however for the Cardinals. With Heath Gibson stepping down as head coach and athletic director at the end of last season, Hermleigh hired Shane Mallory to take his place. Mallory led Throckmorton to a state championship last fall and will bring his seasoned playoff experience to the Cardinal program.

Another reason for excitement is the return of a large senior class for the Cardinals. After injuries plagued the team at the end of last year, many of the juniors and underclassmen had the opportunity to step in and gain valuable playing time that would have otherwise not been available had the team stayed healthy.

With a host of reasons to be excited about Hermleigh football, the Cardinals know the most important day of the upcoming season is Monday. It will be the first page they plan to write in what they know can be a storybook season.
